If you’ve been keeping tabs on what I’ve been up to recently, you’ll know that last night was a pretty special one. I co-organised the opening night of The Magic Room. An event that took the concept of ‘a night out’ and elevated it into something far more extraordinary, and yes, magical!

Now, if you’re reading this in the future, maybe even a year from now, know that The Magic Room is not just a single event, it’s a recurring experience held regularly throughout the year.

The purpose of this blog post is to offer you a front-row seat to last night’s highlights. I’ll recap the night’s most jaw-dropping moments and give you a taste of what you missed – of course, I’m secretly hoping the ‘fomo’ sets in and you want to check out one of our future events. You’ll have to be quick though, we’ve already sold out the front row for the next show in November.

So strap in as I guide you through a mix of high-end magic acts, and audience interactions that were anything but ordinary. And if by the end, you’re craving to be part of the live experience, I’ll tell you exactly how to join the fun.

Let this blog post serve as your introduction to a world of magic!

WHAT IS THE MAGIC ROOM?

The Magic Room is a night of captivating parlour magic, for a small audience, with impossible magic, comedy, and surrounded by incredible food and drink. We encourage you to come along earlier to soak up the atmosphere.

WHERE DOES THIS TAKE PLACE?

55 Wade Street in Lichfield, transforms into The Magic Room, with space for just thirty-four curious souls. It’s an intimate room arranged with three rows of six seats at the front for those who want to be part of the action, and four tables of four offering more space and a chance to sit with a group of friends. All seats have a fantastic view.

Whether it’s your first time seeing a live magic show or you’re a true magic fan, this layout ensures that every seat feels like the best in the house.

As guests began to trickle in and grab a drink from the bar, or a bite to eat, the room started to buzz with anticipation. This wasn’t an ordinary crowd. These were a group of cany people ready for a spectacle, a night that promised more than just card tricks.

THE ACTS

Our MC for the night was none other than The Dark Lord, Beelzebub, who despite initial reservations, actually turned out to be quite a reasonable guy. We also found out how many sloths there are down there in eternal damnation, “not a lot!” being a fantastic call back to an earlier Paul Daniels reference!

Then it was on to the magic, with me – Ed Sumner! It’s probably unfair for me to review myself as I’ll always be critical about things that other’s weren’t aware of, but just generally I thought my set of magic was well received, and had a good mix of sleight of hand skills, comedy, and magic. One of the staff members from the bar attended the show on their night off, and it was a wise move to ask her to assist with one of the tricks. A large cheer went up and she enthusiastically played up to it, which was a lot of fun.

After a short break for refreshments, we saw a little more of The Devil, and we saw his accomplice Damon Conlan. I say that, because how else did he perform the miracles we witnessed? The stand out moment for me, (and I say this as a magician who knows a fair bit about magic), was the levitation he performed towards the end of his set. However, I know from speaking to the audience afterwards that what they loved as well as the magic, was the comedy and performance that went along with it.

That sort of sums up what we’re doing at The Magic Room. This isn’t just a series of routines, but a performance that covers a wide spectrum of entertainment – it’s fun, it’s lively, it’s upbeat, it’s conversational, it’s comedic, sometimes it’s dark or mysterious too. Many people have a misconception of magic as being quite one dimensional and boring. And it can be when it’s performed badly, but not when you get a group of quality professional performers together. Then it transforms into something incredible.

We won’t have the same acts every month, so check the Events information page or our Facebook page for news of any special guest appearances. Whether you’re a fan of the art form or just curious, there’s always something new to discover at The Magic Room.

THE AUDIENCE

Of course we couldn’t have done this without the audience and we’re so grateful for everyone coming along to see the show. Here’s just what some of those who attended had to say about the show:

“We’re already planning on coming back next time!”
“Didn’t know what to expect, but thoroughly enjoyed it.”
“The magic was incredible!”
“Really fun and entertaining.”
“Definately reccommend it.”

Looking for a magic mentor?

we’re far from done. The next instalment of The Magic Room is already on the calendar, and trust me when I say, you won’t want to miss it.

Check out our schedule here to find out what magical experience we’ve got coming up next.

While the cast of magicians may change, the essence of The Magic Room remains constant. We’re providing a commitment to awe-inspiring performances that leave you amazed and thoroughly entertained.

Of course, the true magic came from the people in the room. Our magicians were extraordinary, yes, but the night wouldn’t have been half as spellbinding without an audience willing to come on this crazy journey with us. Thank you for making this event a huge success.

Here’s to many more nights of awe, astonishment, and magic.
