Different Types of Stage Magic: Exploring the Options

When it comes to stage magic, there are a range of different styles of performers. Each brings its own unique flair, and the best for you depends on a variety of factors. With this in mind, in this short post, I’ll talk through some of the different formats for stage magic and the benefits (and negatives) of each. And then I’ll talk through some of the style of stage magic too. Hopefully, all of this information will help you to choose the perfect type of magic for your event, but of course, if you want to ask anything, you can always reach out to me by email here. I’m always happy to talk about magic, entertainment and events.

And if you are considering close up magic, you might also want to see my post: Different Type of Close up Magic

First let’s look at the formats:

THE AFTER DINNER SHOW

The after dinner show is a classic choice for events where guests have settled from dining and are ready to be entertained. This type of performance usually lasts for 25 minutes, and includes a mixture of comedy, personal anecdotes and of course, impressive, impossible magic. It's the perfect way to end a meal and lead into the next part of the night, whether that is speeches, awards or a disco. In fact, this is one of the most popular forms of stage show that I get booked for.

MULTI-PERFORMER MAGIC NIGHT

For those looking to create an event centred around magic, a multi-performer magic night is the way to go. This extravaganza based around my very popular night of magic, The Magic Room, includes several magicians, all hosted perfectly by a crowd pleasing host. One advantage of this option is that guests get to enjoy a range of magical styles in one evening. However, as mentioned, this really is for a magic focussed night, as the entertainment takes place over the course of about 90 minutes, although an intermission can be scheduled and any announcements or short speeches can be incorporated.

PARLOUR MAGIC

For smaller audiences, perhaps fewer than 50 guests, a parlour magic show could be the perfect entertainment choice. This type of performance is more intimate than a grand stage show but still offers the theatrics of magic. It's designed to be performed closer to the audience, often in settings such as a front room (hence, the term parlour magic) or within a private dining room, or other hired space. This type of show, which is great for friends and families, offers a personal touch that larger shows often miss.

THEATRE MAGIC

Performing magic in theatres allows for grander illusions and a more dramatic presentation. This setting provides a magician with the technical capabilities to perform large-scale illusions that wouldn't be possible in smaller venues. Theatre shows are ideal for audiences who want to immerse themselves fully in the spectacle of magic.

And now let’s look at some of the styles of stage magic.

MIND READING

Mind reading, or mentalism, presents an intriguing branch of stage magic that delves into the powers of the mind. Mentalists perform feats that appear to tap into thoughts and emotions, often leaving the audience questioning the limits of human capability. The difference is instead of asking, “how did you do that?” you might find yourself asking, “how did you know that?” This type of performance is perfect for events where interactive participation is a key requirement.

COMEDY MAGIC

Everybody loves to laugh, right? Comedy magic is a genre that combines the art of illusion with the timing and delivery of stand up comedy. I’ve practiced both art forms, so I’m in the perfect place to combine the two. In fact, much of my magic is interwoven with spur of the moment comedy. Don’t tell anyone, but sometimes the best spontaneous comments are pre-planned!

This style of stage magic performance is an excellent choice for events where a lighter, more relaxed form of entertainment is appropriate.

STAGE ILLUSIONS

Stage illusions are the big, bold statements of the magic world. They often involve large props, assistants, and a dramatic flair that can fill an entire stage. Think Las Vegas, people being sawn in half, helicopters appearing, etc. I don't perform this type of magic, but I can certainly recommend magicians who do, if you’re event is on a really big scale (and you have the big budget to match).

MANIPULATION MAGIC

Card manipulations are fascinating. It’s a mesmerising display of skill, where a magician performs intricate tricks with a deck of cards, with coins, with billiard balls, or with other simple objects. Although I don’t currently have a manipulation act, this is a style of magic that I love to watch. The precision and finesse required for these tricks are nothing short of spectacular. Just take a look at this video below of one of the best card manipulators in magic.

BEST TYPE OF STAGE MAGIC FOR YOU?

What stage magic offers is a spectacle that close up magic rarely achieves. Don’t get me wrong! I love close up magic, but the feeling with close up is more friendly, light hearted, impromptu moments of discovery, whereas stage magic is about a well crafted theatrical style show. They can both be fun but you might feel that one is more suited to you than the other.

Certainly, if you want to entertain a group of people at once, then stage magic is the way to go. I’ve found that it’s becoming increasingly popular as few people have seen sophisticated professional magic routines performed in this show style format. The major advantage is that without any interruptions, the performer has the chance to create not just a great trick, but an engaging and memorable experience.

If you’re interested in finding out more, then of course, I can help with that, either with my own stage magic or parlour magic shows or by recommending someone from my network of professional magicians and performers.
