Who is the Best Magician in the World, Right Now?
Who is the best magician in the world right now? Well, it's certainly difficult to give a definitive answer to this question, as preferences can vary widely. However, What I can do is explore some of the most talented and well-known magicians of today.
Let's jump right into it.
DAVID BLAINE
David Blaine first gained notoriety with his television special, "Street Magic," where his close up street magic, inspired a new generation of magicians. I was already into magic by then, but he certainly inspired me to keep going! I loved watching those shows. He has since gone on to perform several large scale (and dangerous) publicity stunts, including being buried alive, being encased in ice, and standing on top of a 100ft pillar in the centre of New York. These days he continues to reinvent himself and currently has a popular stage show in Las Vegas! He would certainly be considered one of the defining magicians of our era.
DAVID COPPERFIELD
Another influential figure in magic is David Copperfield. He is perhaps best known for his grand illusions and dramatic storytelling, which were key components of his many TV specials from 1978 and throughout the 80's and 90's. Copperfield's career has spanned over four decades, and continues to this day. Copperfield has been phenomenally successful, not only with his legendary feats, such as making the Statue of Liberty disappear and walking through the Great Wall of China, but also with routines from his Las Vegas show, as Flying. Talking of that show, he has sold a lot of tickets! At one point he was only the second self made billionaire (with a B) in the entertainment industry. The other was Oprah!
SHIN LIM
Now let's talk about a more modern magician. Shin Lim is a Canadian-American magician, who has taken the world by storm with his mesmerising close up magic performances. He gained worldwide recognition after winning the 13th season of America's Got Talent in 2018 and later went on to win the first season of America's Got Talent: The Champions. We magicians already knew about his ability as in 2015 he became the World Champion of Card Magic at FISM. His unique blend of card magic and storytelling leaves audiences in awe, while his humble and charismatic personality makes him a fan favourite. Shin Lim's skilful manipulation of cards, combined with his theatrical stage presence, has earned him the distinction of being one of the best magicians in the world today.
DERREN BROWN
And here's a magician my UK readers will be more familiar with. Derren Brown, is a magician, mentalist, and psychological illusionist, who has made a significant impact on the world of magic with his unique approach to performance. Brown's distinct style, which often involves psychological manipulation, suggestion, and misdirection, sets him apart from traditional magicians who focus primarily on sleight of hand or grand illusions.
His television specials and stage shows have captivated audiences for over two decades. He first rose to prominence with his television series "Mind Control" in the early 2000s, and "Derren Brown Live" (his first live show, which I went to see!). But it's his ability to weave intricate narratives and engage audiences in thought-provoking discussions about belief, perception, and the power of the mind has made him one of the most celebrated and innovative magicians of his generation. I highly recommend his book "Happy!"
Certainly an incredible live performer and one of the best magicians in the world, today.
JUAN TAMARIZ
And here's a magician you may have never heard of. Juan Tamariz is a Spanish magician and one of the most influential figures in the world of close up magic. He has been enchanting audiences for more than five decades with his unparalleled skill, wit, and charm. Often referred to as "The Maestro," Tamariz is renowned for his masterful command of card magic, as well as his ability to create an intimate connection with his audience.
Over the years, Tamariz has also developed a number of signature effects and techniques, which have become staples in the repertoires of countless magicians around the world. In addition to he also a prolific author and teacher, having founded La Escuela Magia de Madrid and written several books on the theory and philosophy of magic. His passion for sharing his knowledge for magic and love of performing is clear for anyone who has the honour of meeting him or seeing him perform.
PENN & TELLER
The long-standing partnership of Penn Jillette and Teller, known as Penn & Teller, has entertained audiences for over 40 years with their unique blend of magic, comedy, and skepticism. The duo's approach to magic, which sometimes even involves revealing the secrets behind their tricks, has earned them a dedicated following and critical acclaim. Their long-running show, "Penn & Teller: Fool Us," challenges magicians to perform a trick that the duo cannot figure out, highlighting their vast knowledge and expertise in the field.
BEST MAGICIANS FROM THE PAST
It's important to also remember the legendary performers who paved the way for modern magic. Harry Houdini, is arguably the most famous magician of all time! In fact for many, when you say the word magician, that's the only name that springs to mind. He was renowned for his daring escapes and death-defying stunts. His incredible ability to break free from chains, locks, and straitjackets captivated audiences worldwide and solidified his status as a true icon.
