A truly great professional magician can transform any event with level of engagement that few other entertainments can match. So, when you are planning an event that you want to truly stand out, you might be asking yourself the above question:

However, one of the first decisions you'll face is whether hiring a magician who is local to your area is the best measure.

In my case, I'm based near Birmingham, Nottingham, and Staffordshire, but like many magicians, I also travel across the country (and occasionally internationally too).

Proximity and Accessibility

One of the reasons to hire a local magician is that, travel can take it's toll on people. If someone has to drive for four or five hours to get to your event, then they might not arrive as fresh as they would it was just thirty minutes away.

For me, most of my work takes place within two hours drive from where I live. Plus for those events that are towards the further end of that, I leave plenty of time so that I can take breaks on the way, and arrive early enough to relax before the performance.

Understanding of Local Venues

Local magicians may have prior experience with nearby venues, which can certainly streamline the setup and performance arrangements. They may even be able to recommend a venue, if you are still looking for one.

This to me, seems like a minor thing if you are considering hiring a close up magician. The set up for a close up magician, is literally ten minutes. I put a few things in my pocket, and I'm good to entertain you and your guests for two hours! On stage, there is more set up involved, but professional magicians are professional exactly because they can adapt to any environment.

Costs

Hiring a local magician who lives near you and your event, may offer savings on travel expenses or rather an absence of additional travel costs.

As mentioned I don't charging travel until the drive is over two hours, but even then I find that some of my clients are happy to pay that as they know they will be getting a quality magician when they hire my services.

Community Support

Now this seems like a good reason to hire a local magician. By hiring a local magician, you're supporting the local economy. If there's a professional magician that meets your needs then maybe you don't need to look for anyone else.

If you have been given a recommendation of a magician, or perhaps seen one live at an event, then that is a great choice. You already know that they will do a fantastic job, and that's a much better decision than scrolling the internet and picking 'any' magician.

And how far back do they go?

You know, it's quite fascinating how perspectives shift depending on geography. I once performed at an event with a large number of international artistes, including the World Yo-Yo Champion who flew in from The Netherlands. Strangely, that event was only about 10 miles from my home.

Ironically, while I was the local magician for this occasion, I shared the stage with international stars, blurring the lines between local and global talent. The event organiser was initially surprised to learn how close I was, a reminder that proximity doesn't equate to a lack of skill or prestige.
