7 Tips to Pick the Perfect Wedding Suppliers
Planning a wedding is an exciting yet challenging journey, and one of the key elements in creating your dream wedding is selecting the right suppliers. I've found that smaller, local suppliers can often offer personalised services and unique touches that big companies just can't always match. However on the other hand, larger companies have the experience of providing services and hundreds of weddings throughout the year, and while it might feel a little impersonal that rock solid foundation, may be what you are looking for.
In this blog post, I'll explain seven key strategies to help you pick the perfect wedding suppliers for your big day, whether you choose to go for someone local or a large company!
1. DETERMINE YOUR VISION AND BUDGET
Before starting your search, it would be useful to have a clear vision of what you want your wedding to look and feel like. From this you should establish a realistic budget for each component of the wedding. This will not only help you streamline your search but also ensure you're not overspending on certain aspects.
I've often heard it said that budgeting isn't so much a matter of affordability but of priority. We don't all have unlimited budgets, so compromises may have to be made somewhere. If you really want to spend thousands of pounds on a cake, and that is what is most important to you, then it might mean spending less on something else.
One thing I would suggest though, is that you allocate a healthy budget for entertainment. I've found that many couples get really excited about the venue and decorations, and you absolutely should have a surrounding that you like and feel comfortable, but honestly at a wedding, the thing people will remember most is how they are feeling. If they are bored, then the setting, the flowers on the table and the food, won't do much to prevent that.

2. RESEARCH SUPPLIERS
Begin your search for suppliers by researching online, attending wedding fayres, and asking for recommendations from friends, family or even the other suppliers you've booked. The wedding industry, while a huge industry nationally, often tends to form into small local groups. I know in my case, I have a list of dedicated suppliers that I can recommend, and if I can help you out in any way, then I would be more than happy to connect you.
Local wedding groups on social media can also be a treasure trove of information. Remember, local suppliers often thrive on word of mouth referrals, so personal recommendations can often lead you to some of the best in the business. This is the approach I took with my own wedding. We were really keen that all of our suppliers were local, not only so that we could reduce the environmental impact, but also because we wanted to support the local economy.

3. CHECK ONLINE REVIEWS AND PHOTOS
In today's world, online reviews are an essential part of researching any supplier. Look for reviews on various platforms such as their website, social media, and wedding forums. Reading about other couples' experiences with the supplier can provide valuable insights into their reliability and quality of work. Furthermore, check their website or ask for photos of them working at weddings. This will give you a realistic sense of their services and how they interact with people at actual events.
In my case, simply by browsing through my website, including this page on weddings, I hope you will able to see that I've done this before. Your wedding won't be the first, or even the hundredth wedding I have performed at. In fact, at the time of writing, I've performed at over 600 weddings! It's why I have fantastic reviews and photos like the ones shown below. My point is, look for this level experience from the suppliers you choose.

4. ASK FOR SAMPLES AND PORTFOLIOS
This is similar to above point, but is particularly important for suppliers like caterers, bakers, florists, and photographers. It will give you an idea of the quality and style of their work, and you can see if it aligns with your wedding vision.
For magic it's difficult to give a sample, unless we meet in advance, (read my next tip for more on that) but as mentioned one good way to get a feel for their style is through the photos, and also the videos, on their website.
5. MAKE PHONE CALLS OR SCHEDULE MEETINGS
This one is important, once you've shortlisted potential suppliers, give them a call, arrange a video call or if you are local then arrange an in person meeting. This will allow you to discuss your vision in detail, ask any questions you may have, and get a feel for their personality and work style. Remember, you'll be working closely with these suppliers, so it's essential to find someone you're comfortable with and who understands your vision.
I always find it unusual that some people send me enquiries for weddings asking me simply to give them a price list, but not telling me anything about their wedding, or putting on their phone number on so that I can call to check. Whilst I understand that they may initially want to get a ballpark figure, it's frustrating because part of booking a performer is the personality of the person, and it's difficult to judge that if all you have to go on is the written word.
In case you're wondering, at the time of writing (2023) my price for a wedding runs from £490 for a few hours of walkaround magic to £1300 for my top package.
6. CONFIRM PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS
When choosing your wedding suppliers, it's crucial to ensure they have appropriate professional credentials. This sometimes includes memberships of professional bodies related to their industry (for example, I am a Member of the Magic Circle) although not all of these are relevant and there are excellent suppliers who for their own reasons choose not to join these associations.
One thing that is vital, however is public liability insurance, and for caterers, hygiene certificates. Insurance is particularly important as it provides a safety net in case of any unforeseen circumstances or issues during your wedding. Don't hesitate to ask potential suppliers about their credentials during your discussions.
7. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS
Finally, trust your instincts. If a supplier doesn't seem quite right or doesn't understand your vision, it is acceptable to look elsewhere. Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, so it's essential to choose suppliers you trust and feel comfortable with.
